The weather forecast was good, warm and dry which we all managed to take advantage of except the luckless Giles (Toad). His FJ was misfiring on start up which I managed to trace to a U/S coil. After replacing the coil I tried to restart the engine but there was still no power, this the problem was traced to a poor connection to the main kill switch and wiring loom. What’s the chances of having two faults eh!. This meant Toad missed out on the practise session.
Forgotten Era; Race for grid position.
Due to the 125 and 250 GP two stroke class having less contestants, they were also entered into the Forgotten Era class, not really a problem except the first two grid positions was given to two 125 GP bikes, Wow! How fast are these little ‘strokers’?
Corky due to his nil starters on the last two races (broken bone in hand) was sent back to position 12th.
From the start the GP bikes were to upset the apple cart and within the first few laps the two fast guys were in front. Over the next few laps another 250 and 125 got passed me, I had a quick look behind see the rest of the boys about 6 seconds back, so I just tagged onto the back of the pocket rockets and kept my head down.
Meanwhile, Liam was having a ‘ding dong’ behind me with the ex champ Dennis Sholicar . Liam was out braking Dennis into the hairpin only to have Dennis take him out of the Banking and down the back straight. Eventually Dennis had a moment and had a massive high side which resulting in him having an outer body experience as he left the bike, when he finally landed back on, his head hit the screen taking a big chunk out. Liam didn’t need any invitation and got ahead to finish behind me in 6th. Dennis stayed on and got 7th. Steven ‘Who’ managed a 11th in front of our Ex-up friend Steve Cave, which is a great result as Steve and his Ex-up are very quick. Only a second behind him came Toad at 13th (not a good number looking at his luck today). Mura came over the line in 15th which was good out of a field of 26th.
Forgotten Era; Race for Points and Trophy.
With my grid position of a second row 5th place and the little buggers on the 125 and 250 on front row I knew I’ll have to get a ‘Stoner’ start, so when the red light dropped and after bit of a wheelie, I barged my way between the leading two 125 only missing them by inches. Having trapped one on the inside of the bend the other one passed me on the exit. Not only are these little bikes fast through the bends but they accelerate like rockets. It took a full lap before the second guy got pass me, I would manage to pull them back on the fastest part of the circuit from about a 100 metres back and be right behind them on the braking into the hairpin. I could tag on there back until the Corkscrew where their light weight and 70hp allowed them to pull away, by the first bend they would be gone. After 4 laps I realised they weren’t getting away and I was starting cruel them back and at one point I though I was going to ruin their party and take a stab at out braking them into the hairpin, then the ‘Red’ flag came out on lap 6.
I should of known who was off, yes that’s right Corky ‘Win in or Bin it’. I noticed him and his Fudge was lying on the main straight while we exited the track. Thankfully he wasn’t hurt but his bike had some more racing scares to add to the missing mudguard and air intakes from his previous moments, I’m sure there is more FJ body work around Anglesey than there is on his FJ.
The shock news was ‘Who’ had also gone down at the hairpin whilst he was on the brakes. Very unlike Mr Smooth to make a mistake, but that’s racing. Again he was fine but the Racing fudge had taken a knock on the left hand side and was missing his electronic pick up triggers etc…
Corky gave us a ‘de-brief’ later and said he was right behind me waiting for his chance to pass when on the exit of the last left hander whilst we was over taking a back maker on a tight line his rear tyre let go and threw him down the track. Its worth pointing out Corky wasn’t hanging around, he had beaten my old lap record with a lap of 1’15.2, but it was short lived as I was lucky to break it with a lap of 1’15.15 only a lap later.
This left Toad to take the next honours with a 9th on track but 2nd in class while Mura made an excellent 10th (3rd in class) in front of Ex-up boy Steve Cave.
You may have been wonder where new boy ‘Thrush’ was while all this racing and crashing was going on, well let it be known he was playing Golf, I’ll say it again. Playing with a stick and a ball in a field. His mum must of been happy that he was doing something sensible for a change.
Steve Cave did point out the only reason I was winning was I’m using my 2009 ‘Big Bang’ FJ engine. I made a deal with him if he switches off his ‘Traction Control System’ I’ll revert back to a ‘Little Bang’ engine. He seem happy with the deal. Anything to keep these Ex-up boys in with a fighting chance.
Though Steve also mention that its an advantage having Corky has a team member, as quote “He thins down the field while the rest guard your getaway”.
Next race is a weekend event again at Anglesey over August 1st and 2nd. Why not come along and watch before there is nothing left of Corkys Fudge Racer.
