When I say blame it on the H’s I am sure you know who I mean………………..yep that’s right Horgan & Hacker.
I first met Liam last September after one of our trips to the Nurburgring, he over took us on the M20 on the way home & gave us a wave as he passed at break neck speed. Our van has a big Nurburgring logo on it so its not hard to miss by anyone who is a addicted to the ring & thrills it has to offer. The following day Liam called in to the shop, introduced himself, told us all about this guy called Phil & for 2 ½ hours we exchanged tales of our laps at the ring. As our shop is only ½ a mile from Liam’s house he would call in almost every Saturday for a chat & as we are both bike nuts it didn’t take too long to strike up a good friendship.
As 2007 drew to a close & we entered 2008, plans were being made for the first ring trip at Easter, Caz & I don’t usually go Easter but as Liam said we have to go so we can meet Phil etc, etc, blah, blah…….., so off we went & I must point out at this time that if its anything to do with bikes I will go, I am gullible & very easily talked in to things ( you will need to remember this for later on in this tale). Anyway Caz & I met Phil & the rest of the FJ gang & we had a fantastic time with them all & all parties kept in touch & still do.
During one Liam’s now frequent Saturday visits to the shop he told me all about this FJ racing he does with Phil & in May Steve Munson was joining them for his first race, then the offer came to go up with him & help out etc……….now remember the gullible & easily talked in to things bit, so yes I said, why not. I am not really one for watching bike racing unless it’s the GP or WSB but after watching practice & the first race I suddenly felt inspired & was amazed how good these guys was doing on the FJ’s, the trouble is Phil makes it look so easy & effortless while Liam gives the spectators value for money in true “Ruben Xaus” style, Steve Munson was smooth with flawless lines for his first time out on a strange track, Giles was unknown quantity to me as this was first time I met the guy & seen him ride but he was well up in field as the day went on despite 2 crashes in the morning. Any way to cut a long story short I was hooked !!! The only thing about the whole day was I didn’t realise I was being vetted to join the racing, bloody Horgan & Hacker had taken full advantage of how stupid & gullible I am when it comes to anything to do with two wheels.
Steve and wife Caz, happy to have him back in one piece
Engine that poor Steve manage to blow up
Wasn't his fault. Kent cams end cap came out and puched a hole in the cylinder head, look by rag.
4 weeks later I had purchased my FJ for grand sum of £275.00 & have started work on her, slow but I have made a start ( I am busy man), 8 weeks later I had my ACU licence. Now the plan was to race next year but Phil kept tempting me with the offer of his spare FJ racer for the rest of the year, he even sank as low as to email me the pictures from their last meeting saying “look at what your missing out on, the offer of the spare bike still stands”……….talk about dirty tricks or what !!! On top of the emails I had Liam in the shop every other day saying “ have you got your licence, Phil will let you have the spare bike for last couple of races you know”, so now I had two of them on my back & as Caz will tell you I am weak & easily lead astray by these two.
So people as you can see in the end I had to give in & asked Phil if I could have the bike to do a track day on & see how I faired.
On September 8th we all went to Snetterton for day of testing . I was getting a feel for the FJ & was doing fairly well until we had an engine failure in the 3rd session, this is what happens when you borrow other peoples bikes. Phil took the bike back to his workshop & sorted the problem & then last weekend I was reunited with the FJ for my first race at Anglesey. I will be honest I was dreading this for various reasons, the main being that I didn’t want to let anyone down or disappoint anyone who had helped to get me to this race meeting. So how did you do I hear you ask, well ok is the answer & if you want to know the results look on Fjracer.com but one thing I will tell you is that I had a blast, great time, great company , what more could you ask for. Now all I need to do is thank Phil for the loan of the bike & the on going help, Liam for the on track help & introducing me to the rest of guys.
I guess I should just tell you a bit about the bike before you drop in to a comma completely from reading this……………
How does it go? As good as my old mums broomstick, I passed modern day machinery on it first time out so its no slouch by any stretch.
How does it handle? To be fair Phil has done a great job of setting it up & I could not fault it.
How does it stop? Squeeze the front brake lever & the bike stops like a kid running in to wall.
Complaints ? One or two, the first , I took the toe out of my boot so could do with an inch or 2 more ground clearance. Number two it’s not mine !!!!
Below my £275 racer project (still on going)
Brave (or should it read Stupid) Steve 'Mura' lines up for his first every race having only done two session on a track day on a FJ. (in the deep end eh!).
And what a great job he did coming in just behind Steve 'Who' and Giles 'Toad'
Steve and Caz at their happiest........ Nurburgring. Lindinhof. Pissed
